We won't pretend we're just another "all abilities welcome" club - that phrase gets used so often it's stopped meaning anything. The honest answer is that we've got a strong competitive streak, and we're not shy about it. Ask anyone who's turned up to a "steady" club run expecting exactly that. It's even become a bit of a running joke — we've got our own club "thesaurus" where words like social, easy and steady all quietly translate to full gas.
But that's only half the story. The same riders who'll happily chase a KOM on the way out are just as likely to be first to volunteer to lead a slower ‘all members’ social ride or try to encourage new members to come out. We all love riding bikes - on any surface - and love doing it as a group, especially with newer members… that combination is what keeps people coming back.
We are actively working on making sure beginners and new members feel welcome, not intimidated. Come along, find your pace, and you'll see what we mean soon enough.

Pace and format vary depending on the ride, but we're always upfront about what to expect — average speed in mph is stated in the event description or shared on the club WhatsApp, so you'll know what you're signing up for before you turn up.
As a rough guide: our smaller, regular midweek group rides tend to run at around 17–19 mph, while our longer weekend social and cafe rides sit a bit more relaxed, usually 16–17 mph. Distance also varies with the type of ride — midweek runs are typically shorter and sharper, weekend rides longer with a coffee stop built in.
The best approach if you're new: check the advertised pace for the specific ride you're eyeing up, and pick one that matches where you're at. There's a ride to suit most paces and most Sundays.

It's a fair question, and given our reputation, probably the one on most new riders' minds. Here's the honest answer: it depends on which ride you turn up to, and this is where paying attention pays off.
Every club run has an advertised average speed, set by the ride lead — always worth checking before you turn up, since it tells you exactly what kind of pace to expect. Pick a ride that matches where you're at, and you'll be riding with people at a similar level, not chasing wheels you can't hold.
As for being dropped - on the majority of our rides, we operate a no-drop policy. If you're on the ride, you're not getting left behind; the group waits, regroups, and rides together. The exceptions are our training rides, which are specifically built around effort and pace rather than staying together, and our championship events, which are races by nature. Both of those are clearly flagged as such, so there's never any ambiguity about what you're signing up for.
Short version: check the advertised pace, pick the right ride for you, and know that our regular club runs are genuinely built to keep the group together.

At our heart and core, we're a road cycling club - the clue's in the name. Most of our regular club runs and championship events are road-based, so a road bike is the natural starting point if you're joining us for those.
That said, our riders' interests don't stop at tarmac. We've got a genuine love of gravel and mountain biking too, heading off-road onto trails including Whitelees Wind Farm, so if that's more your thing, you'll find plenty of company here as well.
So whatever you ride - road, gravel or MTB - there's a place for you at Loudoun Road Club. Come along on the bike you've got, and if you decide to expand into another discipline down the line, you'll have no shortage of clubmates to ride with.

Yes and we'd love to see even more women join us. We've got a small but growing women's membership, and regular ladies' rides are organised to suit different paces and moods, so there's a genuine choice depending on what you're after that day.
One thing worth being clear about: don't mistake "ladies' ride" for anything less serious. The fitness and commitment from our women members matches the men's, full stop. We host the Ayrshire Women's Cycle Festival for exactly this reason - we're genuinely invested in growing this side of the club, with a real ambition to see women make up half our total membership. If that's a community you want to be part of building, come and ride with us.

No - mechanical skills aren't a prerequisite for joining us or coming out on a ride. Nobody's going to check your toolkit at the start line.
That said, we'd genuinely encourage you to pick up the basics over time. You never know when a puncture repair or a quick mechanical fix comes in handy - not just for yourself, but for helping out other riders in the group when they're the one stuck at the side of the road. It's a skill that pays off for the whole club, not just you.
Don't let it hold you back from joining in the meantime, though - we'll help you learn along the way.

No — club kit isn't needed to come out and ride with us. Turn up in whatever you've got.
That said, if you join and find you're in it for the long run, we'd always encourage picking up a club jersey or a set of bibshorts at some point. There's a real sense of pride in riding in club colours, and it's a nice way to show you're part of the LRC family.
We're currently partnered with Stolen Goat as our official kit provider. Ordering windows open 2–3 times a year - with an order link shared to all members via the club WhatsApp when it's live, so keep an eye out once you've joined.

We have a group Whatsapp which all new members get added to (you can opt out if you wish!) and this is usually the most active and best way to keep up with any impromptu rides being organised - usually several a week.
For more formal event organisation, we use InstaTeams app. You will be added to this upon joining. This is an app you can download and then be added to the club listing - allowing you to mark your attendance at events you plan to come along to. -
No — British Cycling membership isn't required to ride with us or to join the club. However, as a club affiliated to British Cycling, we'd encourage it.
The main benefit is third-party liability insurance while riding - real peace of mind out on the road. Membership also gets you access to British Cycling's ride insurance, discounts with retailers and partners, and it's a requirement if you ever want to take part in licensed races or certain timed events. It's a small cost for a fair bit of protection and value, but the choice is entirely yours.
